1) See what’s taking space (no guessing)
Start with the built-in view: System Settings → General → Storage (or About This Mac → Storage, depending on your version). You’ll see categories like Apps, Documents, Photos, System, and “Other”.
- Use macOS Recommendations (Optimize Storage, Empty Trash, Reduce Clutter).
- Target big categories first—freeing 5–10 GB is often easier than deleting hundreds of small files.
2) Safe cleanup: things you can usually remove
- Trash: empty it.
- Downloads: old installers (.dmg/.pkg), zips, large videos you no longer need.
- Browser cache: clear from Safari/Chrome if it’s huge.
- Old device backups (iPhone/iPad) if you don’t need them anymore.
3) Find large files without touching personal work
In Finder, search by size and sort results. If you’d rather not delete, move archives to an external drive or enable iCloud optimization based on your workflow.
4) Uninstall apps you don’t use
Apps can easily take 1–5 GB each. Remove unused apps and check “Application Data” in the Storage view when available.
5) Keep free space for performance
When your disk is full, performance suffers. Aim for 10–20% free space to keep swap, caches and updates healthy.
